Penelope J. Stokes was born and raised in New York City and resided there until the age of eight, when her mother moved the family to North Carolina. Penelope has been a lifelong fan of literature and writing, and as a child she had the dream of writing a novel one day. She attended school at Howard University and graduated with a B.A
in English Literature from Fisk University in 1973. While attending Howard, she began working as an editor for Cosmopolitan magazine. After receiving her MFA at the Kansas City Art Institute, Penelope taught at Stanford University, where she worked as an instructor, an assistant professor, and an associate professor before deciding to devote her life to writing.
Her first book was published in 1986 entitled "The Songmaker". She is currently writing her second novel.
